Join us for this full-day event led by Hinterlands artists exploring our relationship with the land and its ecosystems.

The day will include artists’ talks, in conversations, performance, workshops, rituals and interventions that make reference to and expand upon the works in the exhibition. Participating artists and special guests include: Michele Allen, Martyn Hudson, Alexandra Hughes, Dawn Felicia Knox, Mani Kambo, Sheree Angela Matthews, Anne Vibeke Mou, Andrea Philips and Sabina Sallis.

This event is a collaboration with the Baltic x Northumbria University Institute and includes talks by academics and alumni artists from Northumbria University.

Itinerary for the Day

10.30am–11am

As part of her ongoing work the Multispecies Visionary Institute, Sabina Sallis will facilitate an improvised experience within her installation, inviting visitors to immerse and ‘be present’ with the assistance of herbal infusions, tinctures and balms and sound.

11am–12pm

In Conversation: Martyn Hudson (Assistant Professor, Department of Arts, Northumbria University) and Andrea Phillips (Baltic Professor and Director of Baltic x Northumbria University Research Institute) will explore the notions of witchcraft, enclosure and the struggle against patriarchy through the last works produced by artist Emily Hesse.

12pm–12.45pm

Artist’s Talk: Anne Vibeke Mou will talk about her glass making approach and processes.

1.30pm–2pm

As part of her ongoing work the Multispecies Visionary Institute, Sabina Sallis will facilitate an improvised experience within her installation, inviting visitors to immerse and ‘be present’ with the assistance of herbal infusions, tinctures and balms and sound.

2pm–2.45pm

In Conversation: Dawn Felicia Knox will facilitate a conversation about deep time, pollution and the way plants and fungi work together to undo the toxic residue of industrialisation (speakers to be confirmed).

2.45pm–3.30pm

Field Recordings and Shared Reading: Michele Allen invites visitors to listen to sounds from the woodland and join in with a collective reading of archival texts, wildlife records and personal reflections associated with her work The Weight of Ants in the World.

3.30pm–4pm

Performance: Mani Kambo will perform a spoken ritual which celebrates the elements, ideas of transcendence and the transference of energy.

4pm–4.45pm

Artist’s Talk: Sheree Angela Matthews will explore archives, records and power in relation to her work A Country Journal of a Blackwoman (Northumberland).

4.45pm–5.15pm

Throughout the day

Michele Allen invites visitors to share their experiences of wildlife in the everyday, through drawing, writing and conversation, contributing to a shared work in the entrance to the gallery titled Gateshead Witnessing.

Alex Hughes will provide masks created from photographic prints for visitors to try on within her installation.
